Invasion
On September 1st, 1939, Nazi-Germany invaded Poland. After peacefully annexing Austria and the Czech region of Sudetenland, Hitler planned to
take back the areas of Germany that were under Polish occupation as outlined in the Treaty of Versailles following World War I. After attempting to do this diplomatically and through appeasement, Hitler knew that France and Great Britain would act which could lead to additonal conflict in the region. Great Britain, and especially France, did not want to relive the horror and human cost that the first World War brought upon Europe. However, Hitler was steadfast in obtaining Poland to further his acquistion of land and the further expansion of Germany. Just prior to the invasion, Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression pact. The British had been planning to sign a pact with Soviet Union to limit their involvement in Hitler's conquest. Hitler then promised the Soviet Union that he would split Poland's territory with them, which later occurred. Hitler's army marched into Poland from the west and the Soviet Union from the east sixteen days after Germany invaded. Soon after hearing of the Invasion, Britain and France declared war on Germany. After ten days, Warsaw fell to German troops. Germany and the Soviet Union then occupied Poland.
